Singapore is one of the most affordable places in the world when it comes to dining. Local fare found at hawker centres, food courts and kopitiams (local coffee shops) are very reasonable priced.
If the Singapore heat deters you from an outdoor dining experience, a food court is the next best alternative. These are air-conditioned hawker centres, usually within a shopping mall, typically offering local favourite as well as international food in a comfortable, modern indoor setting. As with hawker centres, it is best to find a seat before you order your food. Food prices typically range from SGD 3.00 to 5.00 for a plate of food and SGD 1.00 to 2.00 for a drink. Popular food courts in the city include Bugis Junction, Clarke Quay, Takashimaya Food Village, China Square Food Centre, Food Republic, Banquet (Halal) and Kopitiam.
If you are adventurous and do not mind spending a little more, check out the range of international cuisines available in Singapore. These include Italian, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Chinese and much more ! For more information, please visit www.visitsingapore.com

Many expatriates feel that this is one of the best way to experience Singapore - by living among Singaporeans. There are 22 HDB New Towns in Singapore, which provides affordable flats for more than 80% of the country's population. Each town is designed to be a self-sufficient community with its own schools, bus interchange, MRT stations, places of worship, stadium, swimming pools, shopping centres, cinemas, and hospitals.
Executive Condominiums (ECs) were introduced to cater to the more affluent, especially young professionals who can afford more than an HDB flat, but find private property out of their reach.
ECs are comparable in designed and facilities to private condominiums as they are developed and sold by private developers.
This is perhaps, the most common choice among expatriates due to their choice location and amenities There is no restriction on foreign ownership of private apartments and condominiums Selling prices can range from over S$400 per square foor (psf) in the suburbs to over S$2,000 psf in the prime Orchard Road area.
This is a less common choice among foreigners due to rules governing such properties in land-scarce Singapore. Foreigners are generally not allowed to buy landed properties in Singapore. Permanent Resident must first seek state approval before they are allowed to buy bungalows, semi-detached and terrace houses. But some exceptions have been made, as in the case of the sale of sea-front bungalows at Sentosa Cove on the resort island of Sentosa.
Cluster houses are a group of terrace houses, semi-detached houses or bungalows that share an array of common facilities. The most common facilities cluster houses enjoy are a communal pool. gym and playground.
While prices and rentals rates for public as well as private properties have increased significantly in 2007, there are signs that the market has moderated in 2008. In making the decision to purchase or rent, it is important to consider the financial implications as well as the duration which you expect to be staying in Singapore. You may also choose to renta place upon arival in Singapore, and then decide if there is a need to eventually to buy your own property. The price range and rental rates of properties ill depend on the size, tenure and location of the property. For a more updated list and price of property, you may like to visit the websites of local realty companies or contacts property agent with a Certificate in Common Examination for House Agents (CEHA) and a Membership of Singapore Association of estate Agents (SAEA). A list of the accredited property agencies can be obtained at this website. http://www.saea.org.sg/. There are also many online guides and print resources providing information on purchase or rental of properties in Singapore:

Singapore has one of the most liberal markets for non-landed private residential properties a apartments or condominium units. As a foreigner, you can buy a non-landed property in Singapore freely. They typically come with three types of a land tenure - freehold, 999-year leasehold (which is as good as freehold land as you can own it for nearly 1,000 years) or 99-year leasehold.
There is, however, limited sale of private landed properties offered to foreigners. Foreign persons (including natural persons, foreign companies and societies) are restricted from purchasing:
Ø Vacant land
Ø Landed residential property, such as bungalows, terrace house, semi-detached houses
Ø Residential property in a building of less than 6 levels
Ø A HDB Shop house
Ø A HDB flat purchased directly from HDB
Ø A resale HDB flat where HDB has consented to the sale
Ø Executive Condominium bought under the Executive Condominium Housing Scheme Act, 1996.
Rental rates are subject to location and type of housing with in Singapore. Rental rates can range from around S$2,000 to as high as S$12,000 a month or more, for private apartments of 900 square feet to 2,400 square feet in size respectively. Here are some information on the various types:
Ø Private apartments/condominiums rental rates will be dependent on the facilities, its size, and condition, and location.
Ø Public (HDB) flats located all over Singapore will be an affordable option that usually comes with be sic amenities like food centres, supermarkets, convenient transportation services and more. While foreigners are not allowed to purchase public flats, you may rent them, subject to certain conditions.
Please see HDB's conditions and list of median rentals of flats from their website www.hdb.gov.sg.
Generally, tenants of qualified HDB flats must fall into the following categories:
Ø Singapore Citizens:
Ø Singapore Permanent Residents; or
Ø Non-Citizens legally residing in Singapore (holders of Employment Passes, Work Permits, Student Passes or Long-Term Social Visit Passes.

Singapore has a world-class healthcare system, which is respected throughout Southeast Asia. Most doctors speak good English and many have had training overseas. Both private and government hospitals are equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic technology. Dental care, optometry, and paramedical services, as well as speech, occupational, and physical therapy and widely available. Most housing estates re serviced by government polyclinics as well as private clinics. The Ministry of Health (http://app.moh.gov.sg/) is a good place to start for all health care enquires.
Healthcare services may be paid for through a range of medical insurance policies. Many insurance companies provide coverage and policy plans for foreigners. All healthcare establishments such as hospitals, nursing homes, clinical laboratories, medical and dental clinics are licensed and regulated by the Ministry of Health. Singapore has 23 hospitals, of which two are government hospitals; eight are government-restructured hospitals and 13 private hospitals. There are 19 outpatient dispensaries and polyclinics, and more than 2, 100 doctors in private practice. Through its network of clinics, the Ministry of Health provides a wide range of curative outpatient services as well as maternal and child health services. Fees charged at the government clinics are heavily subsidised by the Government. Some polyclinics also house senior citizen's care centres where rehabilitation and day-care services are provided by the Home Nursing Foundation, a voluntary welfare organization.
Many Singaporeans go to private clinics or government polyclinics for medical treatment for common ailments such as cough, flu and fever. There are also registered pharmacists that work from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm and can be found at most pharmacy chains such as Guardian, Apex and Unity.

Singapore is an open economy with strong presence in the service and manufacturing sector. Manufacturing is the economy's main engine of growth, with electronics accounting for nearly half of the sector. The chemical Industry is the second largest manufacturing sector, and Singapore is also the third largest petroleum-refining centre in the world. Singapore's workers are among the world's best for productivity, work attitude and technical skills. They speak English proficiently, and are dedicated, hardworking, and keen to upgrade their skills and knowledge. The government is focusing its efforts on five industrial clusters: electronics, chemicals, engineering, IT, and biomedical sciences. Singapore reliefs on foreign workers and agents at both ends of the skills ladder. Singapore aims to continue to lure global talent and top management to its shores, most significantly in IT jobs and int he technology industry, and has introduced a new class of tax payers, called "not ordinarily resident," who will earn tax exemptions on income earned outside of the country. Recent evidence has shown weaker economic performance with unemployment rates reaching the highest levels in many years. On the contrary, Singapore's unemployment rate is still lower than that of other developed countries. Foreign talents remain an important resource to Singapore as many companies face problems employing suitable employees to facilitate regionally and locally in the expansion of businesses or replacement requirements. Some suitable career opportunities in the financial sector includes treasury and risk management, funds management, general debt issuance, investment analysis, corporate financial, venture capital, cross - border electronic banking, insurance, investment banking and tax planning. Other service industries include transport, logistics, media and advertising, F&B, wholesale and retail, healthcare, education, social/community services. There are many different sources in which one can embark on a job search in Singapore. The most commonly source is the newspapers, where we have the Classifieds section which caters a job section.
The other commonly used source nowadays would be the websites; we have compiled a list of online job portals which may be useful for job seekers.

This section is meant to help members of the bereaved family understand the procedures needed to register the death, arrange for a funeral, and carry out burial or cremation for the deceased When a death occurs, the family will have to obtain a Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD). With the CCOD, the family may register the death. This will have to be done within 24 hours of the death. Upon registration of the death, the CCOD will be retained by the death registration center and a Death Certificate will be given to the family. You will need this Death Certificate to place an obituary in the papers, engage a funeral director, and when you make arrangements for cremation or burial.
What to do when a Death occurs ?
STEP 1
Obtain Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD) when a death occurs, a doctors at the hospital can certify the cause of death if the cause of death is known AND the cause is natural. He will then fills up the CCOD and hand it to the ward nurse. The family can obtain the CCOD from the ward nurse by producing the identify card of the deceased. If the doctor is unable to determine the cause of death, o r a death has been the result of or has been contributed by an unnatural event (e.g. surgical complication, a fall prior to admission), the doctor is under the requirement of the law (Criminal Proceedings Code) to refer the case to the Police/Coroner. In such cases, the body will be sent to the Centre for Forensic Medicine (CFM) Mortuary (located at Block 9 Singapore General Hospital) in a Police Hearse. The hospital will arrange for this to be done. The family will be told by the Police when to go down to the CFM Mortuary (usually the next day)
What to bring to CFM :
• All medical documents relating to the deceased
• All medicine consumed by the deceased
• Identification papers of the deceased and informant
e.g. NRIC / Passport/Certificate of Registration of Birth/FIN card
At the CFM Mortuary
• The Police Investigator will arrange for the family to view and identify the deceased's body in the presence Of the Coronor.
• The Coroner will review the care and determine if an autopsy is required.
• The family will be informed of the Coroner's decision and the time to claim the body for the funeral.
If the autopsy reveals that the death is unnatural, the Police will need to conduct further investigations into the cause of death and the family will need to assist. Once the investigation is completed, the family will be told by the Policy to attend a Coroner Inquiry at the Subordinate Courts.
STEP 2
Engage a Funeral Director
After the Certificate of Cause of Death has been obtaned, the family may engage a funeral director who will
(i) collect the body from the hospital mortuary
(ii) send the body for embalming (if required), and
(iii) deliver the body to he location of the wake
Please refer to Appendix 1 for a sample list of funeral directors.
STEP 3
Register the Death (this could be done simultaneously with Step 2) Prior to registration, the family should decide whether the body will be cremated or buried as this information is required when registering the death. If the body is in a government restructed hospital, the registration can be done at the hospital (consult the ward nurse where to do the registration). The Certificate of Cause of Death will have to be produced to register the death. If the body is in a private hospital, then the family will have to register the death at
